HVC has waste-to-energy plants in Alkmaar and Dordrecht.

In 2009, the furnaces in Alkmaar and in Dordrecht processed some 870,000 tonnes of household and commercial waste. The plants are in operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 

To the furnaces
The waste that remains after sorting is mixed in a bunker to produce a homogenous fuel before being transported to the furnaces, where it is incinerated at temperatures between 850 and 1100 degrees Celsius. 

Electricity and heat
After incineration, untreated bottom ash is left which is deposited into the bottom ash bunker before being upgraded for further recycling and reuse. The thermal energy from the incinerators is used to generate electricity and heat. 

Modernization
We plan to modernize and expand the plant in Dordrecht with a fifth line, which will eventually replace the older second and third lines.
