Bioenergy plant - HVC Groep

On April 23, 2008, Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands officially opened our bioenergy plant. The plant burns approximately 170,000 tonnes of wood each year. Of this some 70% comes from municipalities that participate in HVC.

The bioenergy plant generates approximately 25 MW of electricity a year, sufficient to supply the annual electricity needs of 60,000 households, a small city.

Green electricity
In the bioenergy plant, we burn wood collected with the bulky household waste and then sorted in the sorting plants. It will also take the wood that is deposited separately at shareholders’ bring sites. The heat is used to produce steam, which is converted into electrical energy in a steam turbine. This is sustainable energy because it is obtained using biofuels.

Renewable energy
Producing bioenergy is generally regarded as a good way of generating affordable, renewable energy in the short-term.

Sustainable society
Carbon dioxide emissions are largely responsible for climate change. With the construction of the carbon-neutral bioenergy plant we are contributing to a better environment and taking a further step towards a sustainable society. The annual carbon profit from the bioenergy plant is equivalent to the emissions from 50,000 cars.

Short construction time
Once we had obtained the building and environmental permits, the plant was built in just 18 months, in cooperation with the German firm of Prokon Nord. The overall cost of construction was approximately € 80 million.
